Little-Trekked South Lake Trail

February 13, 2016 by Lee Leave a Comment

Bishop, California, is central to any set of treks you might want to make in the Eastern Sierras. Two of the closest to Bishop are the North Lake Trail and the South Lake Trail , both of which will lead you all to way to the John Muir Trail, if you wish to reach it.

We opted for an afternoon hike toward the Treasure Lakes, but the scenery was so nice along South Lake itself, we paused too often for photos and needed to return to the trailhead when the light beckoned.

Pausing for lat and long

I used a Magellan Promark 2 for this short hike, setting a waypoint at this creek crossing.

A narrow gooseneck in the lake

The narrowing channel returns to an ambient stream in the driest years.

Trail scrambling

Strewn chunks of stone await to be stairsteps for the agile hiker.

A gradual climb

A well-groomed path gently climbs from the trailhead.

A quote for this month

“Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as you ever can.”
